July's Ocean Night at the Arcata Theater Lounge, hosted by Humboldt Surfrider and the Northcoast Environmental Center, and is going to focused on sustainable seafood harvest. The event will feature the film "Of the Sea", a documentary about commercial fishermen in California. Afterwards there will be a panel discussion featuring local fishermen and oyster growers. On June 21st, part of the FCSP field team trekked up to Smith River in Del Norte County to participate in a Fish and Game Commission sponsored discussion on North Coast Fishing Communities. It was a good group of folks which included fishermen from Crescent City, Eureka, and other points south as well as researchers, local government representatives, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife staff. On Friday, June 9th the Humboldt Bay Harbor District trekked down to Shelter Cove for a meeting of their board of commissioners. While this meeting included regular District business related to Humboldt Bay, large portions were dedicated to issues in the Cove. Laura, from our team, presented the fishing community sustainability planning project. Although the commissioners have seen this item before at a Eureka meeting, it was the first time for a lot of folks in Shelter Cove.
The FCSP team was able to pull together a very diverse and robust group of Eureka waterfront stakeholders to be a part of our advisory committee that will help guide the planning process across the next two years. After a short presentation about the project and local port data, the committee was broken up into two groups where everyone had a chance to voice their opinions on difficulties they see in the port and things they'd like to see in the future. On Tuesday, May 31st the Shelter Cove Advisory Committee had its first meeting. Dr. Laurie Richmond from Humboldt State University and Henry Pontarelli from Lisa Wise Consulting got everyone up to speed on the fishing community sustainability planning process and provided some fishing-related data on both Shelter Cove and the greater North Coast area (presentation available here).
